Demographic, clinical, and biomarker predictors of apnea-hypopnea index from polysomnography in Midwestern sleep clinic patients

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the USA is
estimated to be about 17% of women and 34% of men age 30–
70 years old. OSA is a sleep disorder, characterized by repetitive
upper airway collapse with oxyhemoglobin desaturations
and sleep fragmentation. The severity of OSA is defined by
apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) levels (mild 5 < 15/h, moderate
15 < 30/h, severe ≥ 30/h). The estimated prevalence of moderate
to severe OSA in the USA is approximately 10 to 20%. The
rate is thought to be influenced by the obesity epidemic and to
have increased dramatically over the past two decades…
